Recreation in Fairborn

The Fairborn Parks and Recreation Division feels there is something for everyone when it comes to recreational fun. Many of the activities are annual events, and new activities have been added.

Hike & Explore - April 25, 2015

Bring the family to enjoy a morning of hiking and exploring in Oakes Quarry Park.  Learn about orienteering and how to use a map and compass with hands-on experience hiking the park to find hidden markers. The Annual Fishing Derby - Saturday, May 9, 2015

The Annual Fishing Derby takes place on the second Saturday in May at Community Park Pond. Prizes are awarded for catching the most fish, the longest fish, and the heaviest fish. Prior to the derby there is a Passport to Fishing class for adolescents ages 4 – 17, which teaches casting, knot tying, and fish identification, it is offered and limited to the first 50 registrants. A fishing license is not required, but you will need to bring your pole, bait and basket.  Click here for a printable flyer.

Home Landscaping: A Homeowner's Practical Introduction to the Landscape Design Process - May 14, 2015

Learn more about the process of designing a functional residential landscape plan.  This overview will cover the logical steps required to create a successful master plan that will save the homeowner time and money and be more likely to result in a successful design.  It will include basic principles and basic plant selection guidelines.  Click here for a printable registration form.

The Fairborn Farmer’s Market (April – October)

Each Wednesday from April until the end of October, the Fairborn Farmers’ Market opens mid-morning to early afternoon at the corner of Main Street and Grand Avenue in the Fifth-Third Commons. Patrons can purchase fresh floral arrangements, baked goods, farm-grown produce, herbs, honey, preserves and other related items. All vendors must follow the Cottage Food Rules and have a signed Farmers’ Market Agreement on file with the City.

Youth Adventure & Arts Summer Programs (June – July)

Youth ages 6-12 can celebrate summer with the Parks and Recreation Division! Each camp will have a different theme with activities that will provide fun experiences along with opportunities for youth to learn new things and make new friends.  A printable registration form will be available in late April.  For the full day camps, campers will need to bring a packed lunch.  All camps will take place at Community Park, 691 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd.  The camps are scheduled as follows:

Splash into Summer June 9 - 11 1 - 4 p.m. $25/person

Nature Detectives June 16 - 18 9 a.m. - noon $25/person

ARTventures June 23 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. $15/person

Youth Summer Sports Programs and Camps

We are teaming up with Jump Start Sports to provide youth sport opportunities this summer!  Through these programs children will learn basic techniques and fundamentals taught by Jump Start Sport coaches. Registration information will be available in late April.  All camps and programs will take place at Community Park, 691 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd.  The programs and camps are scheduled as follows:

Junior All Stars

Thursdays, June 11 - July 16

Olympic Multi-Sports Camp

Softball Leagues (Summer and Fall Leagues)

Fairborn runs a summer softball league with registration beginning in January, and a fall softball league with registration beginning in July. Most leagues are limited to six teams. For returning 2014 teams, summer registration opens January 5, 2015 - January 30, 2015. New teams may register on a first come, first serve basis for all remaining spaces beginning February 2, 2015. The final registration deadline for summer leagues is April 24, 2015! There will be a manager's meeting on Thursday, April 30, 2015 and the season will run May 4, 2015 - July 17, 2015 (10 week season).

Tennis League (June – August)

Fairborn's Tennis Leagues provide singles and doubles matches for the tennis enthusiasts. League space is limited so register early. Registration is open to anyone, high school age or older.  There is a $10 participation fee per league.  There will be an organizational meeting on Thursday, June 4th and leagues start on Monday, June 8th.  Singles will be played on Monday evenings and Doubles will be played on Wednesday evenings.

Fairborn’s Annual 5K - Saturday, July 18, 2015

Fairborn’s Annual 5K run takes place on the third Saturday in July at 8:00 a.m. at Rona Hills Park, 600 Roehner Drive. Pre-registration takes place prior to July 1 and many door prizes are made available for those pre-registering (participants must be present to win door prizes). Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, in various age group awards for male and female. Refreshments are provided at the end of the race.
